A STUDY ON STUDENT¢¥S HEALTH-PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOR

Abstract
The purpose of this study was two folds; the first was to introduce Health-Protective Behavior concept and the second, to develop Health-Protective Behavior model through an identification of the factors affecting the Health-Protective Behavior. The questionnaires of 933 college students of seven universities in Seoul were collected and analyzed by using X2-test, ANOV A, Pearson¢¥s Correlation Coefficient, Stepwise Multiple Regression and Path Analysis.
The results were as follows;
1. Major personal characteristics contributing to Health-Protective Behavior and its clusters were major field, sex, current residence style, socio-economic status, number of family and degree of parents¢¥ education. Other personal characteristics, such as age, mainly brought-up area, health science class had no great effect on the Health-Protective Behavior and its clusters. -
2. Considering the relationship between each symptom and Health-Protective Behavior, the non-symptom group did well on the Health-Protective Behavior. Considering the relationship between each symptom and Health Belief variables, the non-symptom group had strong health concerns. Otherwise, the symptom group expressed more concern on susceptibility and severity than the non-symptom group.
3. In this study, Stepwise Multiple Regression was utilized to identify the major variables, which had an effect on each cluster. The most important variables were health concerns, benefits and susceptibility. This meant that health concerns, benefits and susceptibility should be increased in order to promote the Health-Protective Behavior.
4. Path Analysis using recursive model was carried out to identify direct or indirect effects of health conditions on Health-Protective Behavior. Conclusively, it was point out that health concerns, susceptibility, benefits and severity were effect on Health-Protective
Behavior.
